Balsamic Strawberries

Darryl Strawberry was my favorite baseball player when I was a kid. From time to time, I still get the old jingle for the cheesy girl store at the mall “have you shopped strawberry today?” stuck in my head. I bought 2 pints of strawberries for the incredibly low price of $2.50 from the fruit and veg stand. So, strawberries it is.

This is the easiest old Italian lady dessert you’ll ever make. The pepper seems totally out of place here, but it makes sense once you taste it.


8 cups strawberries, sliced

½ cup balsamic vinegar

½ cup sugar

5 turns on the pepper grinder or ¼ t black pepper.


  1. Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir and mix well.

  2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, until the balsamic and sugar form a syrup.

Serve with a dollop of Greek or almond based yogurt. Save your leftovers and use to top oatmeal.
